BIG SPRING, TEXAS — Coahoma’s Tres Vasquez and Macayla Valencia kicked off their season by winning gold in their individual weight class at the Steer Invitational powerlifting meet held on Saturday.
Overall, the Coahoma High School powerlifting teams had a solid performance for their first competition of the season. The Bulldogs finished third out of 11 competing teams, and the Bulldogettes placed sixth out of 12 teams.
Vasquez won the 132-pound boys weight class, lifting a total of 1090 pounds of iron. His individual lifts were 415 on squat, 270 on bench press, and 405 on deadlift. In the girls competition, Valencia captured first place in the 105-pound weight class with a three-lift total of 565 pounds: 210 on squat, 125 on bench press, and 230 on deadlift.
On a special note, freshman Kohen Granton had the biggest lift on the bench press in his weight class. He pumped 275 pounds of iron.
Also contributing to Coahoma's strong performance were Brayden Bishop (975 total pounds), Aiden Bryand (1100 total pounds), and Cloud Ariole (1310 total pounds). All three Bulldogs finished second in their individual weight class.
Kimberly Fortenberry placed third in her competition with 540 pounds lifted while Pailee Fontana (510 total pounds), Bryan Pearson (1020 total pounds), and Madison Bose (400 total pounds) captured fourth in their weight class.
In the boys competition, the team from Andrews won the event with 42 points. Big Spring placed second with 30 points. Coahoma placed third with 25 points, and Odessa was fourth with 24 points.
In the girls competition, Eldorado won the meet with 41 points followed by Junction with 30 points. Big Spring placed third with 29 points, and Andrews came in fourth with 27 points. Coahoma finished sixth with 14 points.
